Our History

The soup kitchen was founded by two Roman Catholic Nuns in 1993 and it was called Mary's Song. They eventually decided to move on to other ministries, and in 1998, they dissolved their corporation and transferred the assets and responsibilities to St. Mary's Caring. We are a community based non-profit, not affiliated with any other organization. We have been operating the soup kitchen for more than ten years.

Number Of Meals Served

For the first three quarters of 2008, we are averaging 1020 meals a month. There are probably hundreds of people in need of this service. Several years ago it was estimated that there were 1100 homeless people in St. Mary's County, and unfortunately, that number has probably increased along with unemployment figures. The need has increased as indicated by the 36% increase in the number of meals served this year, compared to the same period in 2007.

Whom We Serve

St. Mary's Caring serves men, women and children, ranging in age from infants to octogenarians. Our patrons are the unemployed, the working poor, the disabled, the elderly and the mentally and physically challenged.

Our Staff

We have a volunteer Board of Directors, two part time staff members and about 60 regular volunteers.
